Our Story

At the Heart of The Homero Martínez Heart Failure Foundation

is a story of love, resilience, and family commitment to service.

Our father, Homero Martínez, spent 37 years in public education—first as a beloved teacher, then as a compassionate school counselor. But his other great passion was radio. For over four decades, he was known across the border region for bringing joy and connection through La Música Tejana, sharing not just music, but heart and community.

In the 1990s, our family transformed his radio passion into a true family business in Acuña, Coahuila, just across the border from Del Rio, Texas. Together, we built a cultural bridge that united artists, families, and communities through music, interviews, events, and service.

A Family Legacy

When our father passed away in 2015 from heart failure, it lit a spark in my brother Rodney and me to continue his legacy. Rodney embraced the mission with pride—using radio to uplift new artists, support local events, and create spaces for community connection.

He had a gift for bringing people together, and his energy, generosity, and love for our culture made a lasting impact. His unexpected passing in January 2025, also from heart failure, deepened our commitment to turn our shared vision into something greater.

This foundation is now the living extension of both of them.

Carrying the Torch

As a nurse with nearly two decades of experience in advanced heart failure care, I’ve spent my career helping patients and families navigate the same journey our family lived. I’m currently pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University of Detroit Mercy, specializing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult-Gerontology with a focus on Advanced Heart Failure.

This work is more than professional—it is personal.

Why We Exist

The Homero Martínez Heart Failure Foundation was created to honor the lives of my father and brother, and to serve the communities they loved. We focus on:

  • Advocacy and education

  • Mental and emotional support

  • Improving access to specialized heart failure care

  • Serving rural and underserved populations

Our mission begins in Del Rio, Texas, and will continue to grow into border towns and beyond—always rooted in compassion, equity, and a promise to never leave any heart behind.

Our Belief

From a classroom in Texas to a radio station in Mexico, from a family’s grief to a statewide mission—our story is built on faith, family, and service.

This is our story.
Now, it’s a story we share with you.
One Heart, One Community at a Time.
